Clay Diya Painting with Kids: A Family Diwali Activity

Some Diwali preparations are worth slowing down for. A covered table, a few favorite colors and clay diyas can turn an afternoon into something your family makes together. The finished pieces do not have to match - that is part of their charm.

Our diya collection includes unpainted clay shapes, colorful painted designs and wax-filled styles. Here is how to choose a set, then plan a simple diya-painting activity with kids.

Find a diya style for your celebration

Check each listing's photos and included contents before ordering. Empty clay diyas and wax-filled candles are different products; a decorative finish does not establish that a piece is suitable for burning.

What to gather for a family painting table

  • Unpainted clay diyas and a protective table covering
  • Brushes and paints labeled for the child's age and suitable for clay
  • A palette or washable tray, paper towels and water if the paint instructions call for it
  • A protected place where the finished pieces can dry undisturbed

The Tulsi Kyara set does not include paints, brushes, oil, wicks, wax or candles. These fragile clay pieces are decorative craft blanks, not toys. An adult should handle setup and supervise throughout. Choose art supplies intended for children and follow every label; the CPSC Art and Craft Safety Guide is a useful starting point for selecting materials.

A simple diya-painting activity, step by step

  1. Let everyone choose a design. Try alternating colors on the side panels, small dots around the outside or one favorite color with a contrasting border. Keep any carved symbols recognizable if you choose to add color around them.
  2. Start with a dry, gently dusted surface. An adult can check for damage and remove loose dust with a soft, dry brush. Follow the paint maker's surface-preparation instructions.
  3. Paint the outside in light layers. Use the product label's directions for application and drying. Leave the top bowl and wick area unpainted. Skip loose glitter and small stick-on decorations for this simple activity.
  4. Give every piece its own drying space. Follow the full drying time on the paint label before handling. There is no need to rush to finish the display on the same afternoon.
  5. Make an unlit display together. Arrange the dry pieces on a sturdy tray or shelf away from table edges. Add a handwritten place card beside each one, or let everyone explain the colors they chose.

Easy ideas for different ages and group sizes

For younger participants who can safely join the supervised activity, keep the palette small and use simple outside color blocks. Older children may enjoy repeating dot patterns or planning a coordinated set. An adult can hold a fragile piece steady while a child paints.

A four-piece set gives a small family one shared project. For a larger gathering, count the participants first and decide whether each person will decorate a diya or work with a partner. Keep the craft table separate from food and wash hands after painting.

Keep the family activity flame-free

This project is painting and displaying unlit diyas. Do not light the painted keepsakes: craft paints and added decorations have not been established as suitable around a flame. Leaving the bowl unpainted does not make a painted diya safe to burn. Any separate candle or diya lighting is an adult-only activity, away from the craft table, children, pets and anything that can catch fire.

Choose your set and make it your own

Whether you prefer natural clay, bright floral colors or a gold finish, start with the look and the activity you want. See the four-piece paint-your-own Tulsi Kyara set, or browse our Diwali decorations to plan the rest of your display. A few pieces made together can become the part of the celebration everyone remembers.
